Cutting fabric around a template

This Design and Technology scheme of work video supports pupils as they learn to cut fabric accurately and safely when working with templates.

The video demonstrates practical tips for managing fabric, such as working slowly, seeking help when needed and removing excess fabric in stages. Pupils are shown how to cut curved lines by using short, careful snips and how to adjust their work by trimming any areas of extra fabric after cutting.

They’ll be encouraged to check their fabric against the original template and make adjustments using chalk before making final trims. The video highlights the importance of taking time, maintaining accuracy and developing good habits when working with textiles.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 3 Textiles: Cross-stitch and appliqué unit. It supports children in developing their cutting and shaping skills in preparation for constructing their final product.
