Creating shadow sculptures

This Art and design scheme of work video supports a lesson in which pupils will create shadow sculptures, inspired by artist Sokari Douglas-Camp.

The lesson begins with pupils reflecting on positive words that represent their class or values they look for in a good friend or team member. Each child chooses one word and practises drawing it in block letters in their sketchbook, exploring different styles.

To create the sculpture, children cut rectangles of cardboard, draw their letters so they fill the space, and carefully cut them out. The letters are then painted black. Next, the video shows how to arrange the letters along a ribbon, gluing or stapling them in place. Pupils are encouraged to think about how they will display their finished work and how they might pose to become part of the sculpture. The work could be done individually or as part of groups. The final shadow sculpture should be photographed.
