Creating a mixed-media self-portrait

In this Art and design scheme of work video, pupils are guided through the process of creating a mixed media self-portrait, using ideas developed in their sketchbooks.

The video encourages children to begin by considering the composition of their piece, including what size, shape and colour of paper to use, where to place their face and whether to include all or part of their photo portrait. They also reflect on the materials they’ll use and what they want their artwork to communicate about themselves. Pupils are encouraged to experiment with materials and composition before committing to their layout, and to embrace making changes along the way.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 5 Portraits unit. It helps pupils to reflect, experiment and create confidently.
