Creating a photorealistic portrait

This Art and Design scheme of work video supports pupils in creating a photorealistic portrait using a grid drawing technique.

The video breaks down the step-by-step process of setting up a grid on both a photo and a blank piece of paper. Pupils learn to measure and draw matching grids, focusing on accuracy and light pencil pressure.

When the grids are complete, pupils carefully replicate the image square by square, observing the placement of lines and details to build up an accurate outline. Once the sketch is ready, they are encouraged to choose their preferred photorealistic style for adding colour and tone. The video introduces a range of stylistic choices, helping pupils to create a unique piece of work.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 6 Photo opportunity unit. It supports pupils in developing close observational skills, attention to proportion and an understanding of how artists adapt materials and techniques to create realistic effects.
