The french u sound

This Kapow pupil video is part of the Kapow French scheme of work. It helps pupils explore the tricky French letter u, a sound that is very common in French but quite different from how it looks or how it would be read in English. Pupils are shown how the sound appears in familiar words and are guided to notice how it differs from other vowel sounds.

The narrative continues with mouth mechanics, showing pupils how to make the sound by first saying the English “ee” sound, then rounding their lips as if about to whistle while keeping them still. Pupils are encouraged to feel the vibration by lightly touching their nose as they practise. They then listen carefully to phrases containing the sound and count how many times they can hear it. The video finishes by encouraging pupils to find other French words with the u sound in their learning, strengthening their listening, speaking, and pronunciation skills.
