The French ou sound
This Kapow pupil video is part of the Kapow French scheme of work. It introduces pupils to the phoneme made by the letters ou, which in French is pronounced oo. This sound is common and appears in many everyday French words, so pupils will encounter it frequently in their lessons. Examples such as rouge, les couleurs, and écoutez s’il vous plaît are used to show how the sound appears in familiar vocabulary.
The video then guides pupils through “mouth mechanics” to help them produce the sound accurately: rounding the lips to make a long oo sound, practising it slowly, and then trying it in different words. Pupils are encouraged to listen carefully for the sound in short phrases, count how many times they can hear it, and finally think of other French words they already know that use the ou phoneme, consolidating their listening and pronunciation skills.
