Nasal vowel sound an

This Kapow pupil video is part of the Kapow French scheme of work. It introduces pupils to another tricky nasal vowel sound, showing how it can be written in four different ways and recognised when listening to French words. Pupils learn how the sound feels like it comes partly through the nose and partly through the mouth, and practise spotting it in familiar vocabulary such as cinq, train, and sous-marin.

The narrative continues with a mouth mechanics activity, guiding pupils to shape the sound by starting with a wide “a” and slowly closing it into an “angh” without the final g. Pupils are encouraged to listen carefully, try it themselves, and then identify the sound in longer phrases and sentences. The video finishes by asking pupils to recall other French words they know that contain this nasal vowel, helping them become more confident and accurate in their pronunciation.
