The French i sound

This Kapow pupil video is part of the Kapow French scheme of work. It introduces pupils to the phoneme made by the letter i, which is pronounced ee in French. This sound is not to be confused with the English letter e, and it is often described as sounding like a little squeaky mouse. Pupils are shown how to recognise the sound in familiar words such as petit, violet, and triangle.

The video then guides pupils through mouth mechanics to help them produce the sound: showing their teeth in a wide grin while keeping the sound short and clear. Pupils are encouraged to practise the sound, listen carefully for it in short phrases, and count how many times they can hear it. They then check together before spotting the sound in other French words they may already know.
