The é sound in French

This Kapow pupil video is part of the Kapow French scheme of work. It focuses on the sound é, one of the most common vowel sounds in the language, which can be written in several different ways. Pupils learn that é can appear as an e with an acute accent, or without an accent when followed by certain letters such as r, z or t (often at the end of words). It also appears in the common word et, which means “and” in French.

The video continues with examples of words containing é, encouraging pupils to listen carefully and practise the short, sharp sound. Through “mouth mechanics,” they are guided to make the sound by keeping the tongue low in the mouth while pushing the lips slightly wide. Pupils are then challenged to listen for the é sound in sentences and count how many times it appears. The video finishes by asking them to recall other French words they already know that use this sound, helping to strengthen their confidence in recognising and pronouncing é.
