The French eu sound

This Kapow pupil video is part of the Kapow French scheme of work. It introduces pupils to the phoneme eu, which is very common in French but quite different from how we might expect to read the letter e in English. Pupils learn that although the sound can be written in different ways, including with the ligature œ, it always makes the same vowel sound. With practice, they will begin to recognise it in words and sound more authentically French.

The video guides pupils through mouth mechanics, encouraging them to make the sound as if they had just seen something unpleasant. They practise opening their mouths, dropping their jaws, and gently shaping their cheeks to produce the correct sound. Pupils then listen to words and phrases where the phoneme appears, spotting how many times they can hear it. Examples include bleu, neuf, sœur, and cœur. By the end, pupils are challenged to find other French words containing the eu sound in their own learning.
