The o vowel sound

This Kapow pupil video is part of the Kapow French scheme of work. It introduces pupils to the sound made by several different French vowel combinations that all produce an “o” sound. Pupils listen to examples such as Jean, bateau, and enveloppe, and learn how this French “o” is slightly different from English versions, sitting between the “o” in go and the “o” in stop.

The narrative continues with a mouth mechanics exercise, guiding pupils to shape their mouths and practise the sound carefully. They then listen for the “o” sound in short phrases, counting how many times they can hear it in words such as Bordeaux and Margaux. The video ends by encouraging pupils to think of other French words they know with the “o” sound, helping them to consolidate their phonics knowledge and build confidence in pronunciation.
