Guiding pupils through producing graffiiti-style words

This Art and Design scheme of work video supports the lesson where pupils create graffiti-inspired word art, combining lettering, symbolism and colour to represent someone who inspires them.

Pupils explore graffiti and how artists use shape, colour and style to reflect meaning in their work. They’ll be guided to choose a single word that captures the qualities of someone they admire—then sketch and stylise that word in a graffiti art style.

Letter shape, colour and added details are explored as ways to express personality. Pupils consider how their design choices reflect the word’s meaning. They’re encouraged to be imaginative, adding highlights, patterns, symbols or small illustrations linked to the person they’ve chosen.

The video models simple techniques to help children add impact to their finished work, such as outlining and shading. Pupils are reminded to take their time and make thoughtful, creative choices that help their word stand out.
