A guide through some principal steps involved in making structure prototypes from wooden struts

In this Design and technology video, the pupils learn how to use wooden struts to form different types of frame structure that could improve a playground.

The video shows how to build playground structure prototypes using wooden frames based on earlier designs. It explains how to measure, saw, sand and glue equal lengths of wood to create strong frames such as cubes, cuboids, pyramids or triangles, securing joints with masking tape while the glue dries. Different reinforcement methods are demonstrated, including card triangles, lollipop sticks and diagonal bracing, as well as adding walls, features and moving parts using a variety of materials. Throughout, it offers practical tips for using glue and tape effectively and encourages taking time to build a stable structure, with finishing touches completed later.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Design and technology videos, which enable teachers and pupils to explore and make their own products.
