Learning essential colouring techniques

This Art and design scheme of work video supports pupils in developing their colouring technique, focusing on control, consistency and confidence.

It shows how pencil use in colouring is different from writing, including how to adjust pencil grip to use the side of the tip. The video explains how colouring in one direction helps keep work neat and introduces the idea of outlining shapes first to stay within the lines.

Pupils are introduced to the concept of pressure and are encouraged to keep their pressure consistent for even colouring. It also reminds pupils to avoid gaps and fill each shape fully.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 1 Exploring line and shape unit. It provides clear guidance for pupils for them to practice even colouring and build strong drawing habits.
