Belief, celebration and growing up
This Religion and worldviews pupil video presents coming of age ceremonies from different traditions and encourages pupils to think about what these ceremonies show about belief, choice, responsibility and the importance of community support in the journey towards adulthood.
The video begins with Jewish examples, where young people read from the Torah during a Bat or Bar Mitzvah as family and community gather around them. It then moves to scenes from Upanayana within the Brahmin Hindu community, where a boy prepares for spiritual learning through rituals such as head shaving, receiving a ceremonial thread and sitting beside a sacred flame. Christian confirmation follows, illustrated through moments of prayer, receiving communion and young people holding the Bible as a sign of personal commitment.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Religion and worldviews videos, which enable teachers and pupils to explore different beliefs, values and traditions, developing respect and understanding for people of all faiths and worldviews.
