Preparing a bolognese

This Design and technology scheme of work video shows the children how to prepare ingredients for a bolognese using a range of safe food preparation skills. It shows the key processes of cutting celery, carrot and onion using the bridge and claw techniques for safe handling of a vegetable knife. It also shows techniques such as grating carrot with a box grater, extracting garlic using a garlic press and measuring oil with a spoon. The video includes how to use a measuring jug to read liquid levels accurately and how to weigh sugar using both digital and non-digital scales.

The video illustrates each preparation step clearly so the children feel confident and well prepared to make their bolognese independently in the lesson and unit below.
