The legacy of Roman rule in Britain
This History scheme of work video supports teachers in delivering a lesson helping pupils evaluate the Roman legacy in Britain and understand the lasting effects of Roman rule.
The video begins with a historical overview, setting the context of the Roman Empire’s decline and the withdrawal of Roman forces from Britain in 410 AD. Pupils learn how the absence of Roman protection left Britain vulnerable to invasions, creating the conditions for significant change. The lesson explores the abstract but vital concept of ‘legacy’, defined as a lasting impact left by people or events from the past and supports pupils in identifying how Roman contributions shaped Britain.
Pupils investigate various legacies introduced during Roman occupation, such as roads, numerals, central heating, sewage systems, timekeeping, and the introduction of Christianity. They are encouraged to compare life before and after the Roman conquest, analysing how these innovations changed daily life and influenced the development of modern Britain.
The lesson culminates in a reflective task where pupils rank Roman legacies based on their perceived importance today, helping them to form their own historical interpretations.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s History – British history teacher video resources, building pupils’ understanding of continuity and change across time.
