A Knowledge organiser that captures the essential knowledge and skills learnt throughout the unit Design and technology, Year 5, Option 1: *New* Gears and pulleys.
This resource is designed to support pupils as they explore how gears and pulleys can transfer force and motion within mechanical systems. It explains how gears change speed, direction, and force, using clear visuals and terminology such as “input” and “output” to describe mechanisms like those in bicycles. The organiser introduces pulleys as systems that redirect or reduce force, with real-life examples such as sailboats and escalators. It also highlights the importance of identifying real-world problems, conducting market and competitor research, and applying user feedback in the design process. This organiser is ideal for developing mechanical understanding alongside practical, sustainable problem-solving skills.
This unit vocabulary display includes keywords from the unit Science, Year 5, Living things: Life cycles and reproduction and additional unit-specific words that may be helpful in a display.
Key vocabulary is clearly labelled on the display, highlighting essential words that the pupils are expected to retain and reuse in future units. Understanding these words enhances comprehension of the subject and supports understanding of key scientific concepts and processes.

Planning for each year group to support staff and pupils to smoothly transition to our Religion and worldviews, RE scheme of work. All year groups have catch-up units to build a solid foundation of essential knowledge and skills before proceeding to our intended units and lessons for the year group.
Each of the catch-up units consists of selected lessons taken from a range of units in the previous year groups. This will support both staff and pupils in feeling confident and comfortable when approaching more advanced lessons.
