The value of sketchbooks

This archived Art and design scheme of work video introduces teachers to the importance of sketchbooks as a tool for recording, experimenting, and developing ideas. It shows how Key stage 2 pupils can use sketchbooks to sketch, annotate, and try out different techniques without pressure to produce perfect work. The video demonstrates each use, from generating and refining ideas to testing shading methods, adding notes for evaluation, practising details like hands, and experimenting with different media, making sketchbooks a valuable part of the creative process.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s original LKS2 Art and design resources. It supports teachers in helping pupils view sketchbooks as safe spaces for creativity and experimentation, encouraging progress, reflection, and skill development while showing how ideas evolve into finished artworks.
