Understanding prayer and special objects
This Religion and worldviews video supports teachers delivering a unit that explores the big questions: How do people show what they think and believe? and What makes objects special to believers? Children investigate different prayer practices and explore how people from Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, and non-religious worldviews express belief through prayer, meditation, and reflection. The unit helps children understand that even within the same worldview, people may pray in varied ways using special words, actions, clothing, and objects such as tasbih, a talus, or items used during puja.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Religion and worldviews resources – God. It supports teachers in promoting respect for the diversity of beliefs and practices associated with prayer. The video encourages thoughtful discussion, helps address common misconceptions (such as prayer only happening in places of worship), and suggests ways to connect children’s personal knowledge with what they learn. Teachers are guided to create inclusive lessons that reflect their local community and to invite guest speakers or plan visits to enrich pupils’ understanding of prayer across worldviews.
