Supporting independent, real-world geographical investigation
This Geography scheme of work video supports delivery of a flexible Year 6 fieldwork unit where pupils design and carry out their own local inquiry. The unit draws on prior skills and knowledge and encourages independent thinking, with teachers guiding pupils to ask questions, collect and analyse data, and present findings.
Planning is needed to tailor fieldwork to your local area. Topics might include traffic, land use, recycling, or access to green spaces. As part of the unit, pupils will visit a location in their local area to collect data. This part of the learning will likely require additional time and pre-planning and should be tailored to suit your setting. This unit provides a powerful opportunity for pupils to consolidate their understanding of geography as a subject of enquiry, relevance and action.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Geography – Fieldwork pupil videos, giving pupils the chance to investigate the world around them with growing independence and confidence.
