Introducing the Year 4 Every picture tells a story unit

This Art and design scheme of work video introduces the Year 4 Art and design Every Picture Tells a Story unit, which helps pupils develop confidence in interpreting and responding to artwork, using both their imagination and an understanding of the formal elements of art.

Throughout the unit, children will explore how artists use shape, form, tone, texture, pattern, colour and composition to tell stories, express ideas and communicate emotions. They’ll be encouraged to look closely, ask questions, and think about how and why an artist has chosen to create an image in a particular way.

Pupils explore a range of artworks through the unit by a variety of artists, including My Parents by David Hockney and The Dance by Paula Rego. They interpret the art and use it as a starting point for discussion.

This unit helps pupils become thoughtful, expressive viewers of art. The video is part of the original Year 4 Every picture tells a story unit.
