Introducing the Year 1 online safety unit
This Computing scheme of work video introduces the Year 1 Online safety unit, designed to help children understand the internet and how to use it safely and responsibly.
Through these lessons, pupils explore key aspects of staying safe online. They learn what to do if something online makes them feel worried, identify trusted adults, and use role play to explore how online content can affect emotions. The unit also encourages children to be kind online and introduces the idea of a digital footprint—helping pupils think carefully about what they post and share. They’ll also reflect on how to balance screen time with other activities.
The unit addresses common misconceptions, such as thinking all strangers online are dangerous or believing online friends are the same as real-life friends. Pupils are supported to recognise the importance of caution and to seek help from trusted adults if needed.
This video supports teachers to confidently lead lessons that build children’s understanding of safe and respectful behaviour online.
