Introducing the British Empire

In this History video, teachers are supported in delivering a balanced and thoughtful lesson on the growth, influence and consequences of the British Empire. Beginning in the late sixteenth century, the children explore how trade, competition and conflict enabled Britain to control territories across the world.

The video examines the benefits the Empire brought to Britain while addressing the devastating impact on colonised peoples, including slavery, violence and inequality. Through carefully chosen sources, the children investigate contrasting perspectives that encourage discussion about power, resistance and legacy.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Remembrance collection. It offers clear guidance for teaching complex themes such as colonisation, war, migration and independence with sensitivity and purpose, supporting the children in understanding both the global reach and the human cost of empire within the broader context of remembrance.
