Exploring the census through time

This History video introduces Key stage 2 teachers to the unit theme, exploring what the census can tell us about local areas. It focuses on how census data from 1841 to 1921 can reveal detailed information about individuals and communities, including age, occupation, gender roles and household structures. Key stage 2 pupils explore real census records to infer daily life in Victorian and Edwardian England, learning to identify changes and continuities over time.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s History – Census videos. It supports teachers in delivering historically grounded local area studies using primary sources. It offers guidance for addressing sensitive terminology and teaching pupils to ask valid historical questions based on real data.
