Using census data in class

This Religion and worldviews video introduces teachers to the use of Census 2021 data to explore the religious makeup of England and Wales. The lesson supports children in interpreting, analysing, and reflecting on patterns in religious identity, starting with national data and then comparing their local area with a contrasting location. Pupils examine visual representations such as maps, graphs, and charts, using the Census Maps website to discover how religious affiliation varies across the country.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Religion and worldviews resources – people. It prepares teachers to guide children in understanding both the value and limitations of data. It also explains how to navigate and interpret the interactive map, encouraging thoughtful discussion around terms like “no religion” and “other religion”, and prompting critical thinking about how survey categories reflect the complexity of personal belief. The video ensures teachers are confident in helping children explore and question what the data shows about religion in society today.
