Digging into the past
In this History video, teachers are introduced to the skills needed to help pupils understand how archaeologists use artefacts and remains to investigate the past.
The video explores how archaeological evidence can serve as a primary source, shows activities that allow the children to replicate excavation and demonstrates how to analyse objects to make informed deductions. Teachers see how to link archaeological work to topics such as prehistory, ancient civilisations and local history, while also highlighting the limitations of this type of evidence. Practical strategies help the children think critically, piece together information and gain a deeper understanding of how people lived in the past.
This teacher video is part of Kapow Primary’s History skills videos, designed to build teachers’ confidence and skills in supporting the children to explore and interpret archaeological evidence.
