Teaching preferences using ‘gustar’
This Kapow teacher video supports the lesson where children begin to explore expressing likes and dislikes in Spanish. The focus is on introducing the verb gustar, a key structure that often behaves differently from English. Children will encounter me gusta in familiar and engaging contexts, such as talking about activities they enjoy or describing animals they like. Although the structure seems straightforward at first, things get more complex when dealing with plural nouns, such as me gustan los perros. This lesson aims to help children understand that, in Spanish, gustar literally means “to be pleasing”, so the verb changes depending on what is liked, not who is doing the liking.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Spanish scheme of work – grammar. It guides teachers through the grammar behind gustar with clear examples and tips for classroom explanation. By helping pupils shift their perspective and see how the subject and verb agree in Spanish, you’ll lay strong foundations for future grammar learning. The lesson encourages children to use me gusta and me gustan confidently, while also supporting the wider development of grammatical awareness through patterns and sentence building.
