Introducing latitude and longitude to locate places on Earth
This Geography scheme of work video supports teachers in introducing pupils to the global grid system—a framework of latitude and longitude lines used to pinpoint locations on Earth. It provides clear definitions, visual cues, and real-world context to help pupils grasp how these imaginary lines work together.
Teachers are guided through how to explain that lines of latitude run horizontally around the Earth, parallel to the equator, and are measured in degrees north or south. The five major lines of latitude, Arctic Circle, Tropic of Cancer, Equator, Tropic of Capricorn, and Antarctic Circle, are introduced to help pupils visualise global divisions and relate them to climate zones.
The video highlights the purpose of this system: to help navigators and map readers determine exact locations on a world map. Teachers are reminded that pupils at this stage should use whole-degree references only (no decimals), keeping the skill accessible and achievable.
