Tudor royal progresses explained
In this History video, teachers are supported in introducing Key stage 2 pupils to the tradition of royal progresses during the Tudor period, focusing on their political importance and public impact. It explains how monarchs like Henry VII, Henry VIII and Elizabeth I used these extensive tours to secure loyalty, demonstrate power and escape the unhealthy conditions of London. The video explores the logistical scale of progress, involving hundreds of courtiers and placing financial responsibility on local hosts. It shows how Elizabeth I, in particular, used progresses to shape her public image and reinforce her authority through strategic displays of wealth and personal connection.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Tudor England History videos. It helps teachers guide pupils in understanding how Tudor rulers maintained power and influence across the country through royal progresses, offering insight into the relationship between monarchy, propaganda and public perception.
