Creating 3D sculptures from paper

This Art and design scheme of work video supports a lesson where pupils explore how rolled paper can be used to create simple 3D sculptures. It introduces the idea of sculpture and encourages discussion about how this differs from paintings or drawings.

The first challenge is to roll a paper cylinder that holds its shape without using glue. The video highlights the importance of material choice and suggests techniques to help the cylinder stay in place. Children can roll paper by hand or around a cylinder-shaped object like a pen or glue stick. They then attach their tubes to a cardboard base using PVA glue or folded tabs. Pupils are encouraged to experiment with tube height, width, colour and placement.
