Making a tree of life

This Art and design scheme of work video supports children in creating their own 3D tree of life drawings, taking inspiration from examples from cultures around the world.

The lesson begins with a discussion of tree of life imagery. Pupils explore similarities and differences between examples, such as what the tree is made from, how it’s shaped, and which creatures appear in its branches. They learn that this powerful symbol appears in many traditions.

Pupils then plan their own version of the tree of life in sketchbooks. They’re especially encouraged to think about size and shape. Using large background paper and a variety of paper strips, children apply shaping techniques learned in earlier lessons including folding, rolling, scrunching and zigzagging, to build a bold 3D image.
