Exploring the global and local importance of the rainforest

In this Geography video, teachers are supported in helping the children understand the vital role the Amazon rainforest plays in both local livelihoods and global climate regulation.

The lesson begins with a narrative recounting the arrival of miners and loggers in the Amazon, examining how their actions disrupted the environment and the lives of indigenous communities. Teachers are guided in sensitively presenting multiple perspectives, including the reliance of local people on the rainforest for income and the challenges faced by over 400 indigenous groups.

The lesson also links the consequences of deforestation to global climate change, using a simplified carbon cycle diagram to explain the role of trees in regulating greenhouse gases.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Geography climate videos and helps develop pupils’ environmental literacy and global awareness.
