Investigating texture

This Art and design scheme of work video helps pupils explore how paint can be applied in different ways to recreate texture, using tools and techniques beyond just a brush.

To begin with, children become texture detectives, heading outside to collect objects or observe surfaces. They use detective lists to identify and describe textures and take photos to refer back to later.

Back in the classroom, pupils choose one texture to recreate using paint. The focus is not on painting the object itself, but on experimenting with how the texture might feel if it were made with paint. The video encourages using a wide variety of tools to find creative ways of applying paint. As they work, children are prompted to think about colour mixing and describe their textures using precise vocabulary.

To finish, pupils leave a descriptive word on a classmate’s painting and reflect on how their own work has been interpreted by others.
