Learning how to join card shapes

This Art and Design scheme of work video introduces a lesson where pupils explore how to join card and paper shapes using a range of techniques. Through this they will develop problem-solving, collaboration and construction skills.

The lesson begins by introducing the work of sculptor Anthony Caro, whose abstract sculptures will inspire the unit. Pupils begin to recognise how artists work in different ways and how sculpture can be expressive, experimental and unexpected.

Children work together to build larger forms from simple materials. The focus is on exploration rather than perfection. Pupils first learn a wrapping method, using glue-soaked kitchen roll to join shapes. They experiment with forming triangular pyramids and joining newspaper rolls at different angles. Next, they move on to larger cardboard shapes, considering how to balance or secure them so their structure stands independently. Children can try variety of joining techniques and reflect on what works best.
