Engaging further with sculptures

This Art and design scheme of work video introduces a lesson in which pupils will refine their abstract sculptures, exploring how colour, texture and display can enhance their finished work.

The lesson begins with pupils comparing the work of two sculptors, focusing on how sculptures are placed and experienced in space. It encourages children to think about viewpoint, touch and how surface changes can affect the overall feel of their work.

Pupils are invited to reflect on their own sculptures, making decisions about finishing touches, while understanding what is a realistic decision to make at this stage. Suggestions include adding colour to planning sketches first, testing textured materials before fixing them, or using a single paint colour to unify different parts. Practical ideas for adding texture are also shared. The video recommends ending the lesson with a gallery-style experience, where pupils describe their work and how their ideas developed.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 3 Abstract shape and space unit. It provides practical strategies to help pupils complete and display their sculptures with purpose, confidence and creativity.
