Supporting pupils to plan their sculptures

This Art and design scheme of work video assists teachers in helping Year 6 pupils plan their final three-dimensional piece: a memory box sculpture.

Inspired by the work of Joseph Cornell and his shadow boxes, children will explore how memories can be represented through assemblage art. This lesson focuses on the planning stage, encouraging pupils to generate ideas and begin deciding what they might include in their sculpture. Plans should remain flexible, allowing space for experimentation and change during the making process.

Teachers will act as consultants during this phase, supporting individual conversations to guide children’s thinking and manage practicalities, including sourcing materials and setting appropriate expectations. Children should be reminded that permission is needed for any objects brought from home, especially those that may be altered.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 6 Making memories unit. It helps pupils express identity and memory through creative exploration.
