Helping pupils draw from observation

This Art and design scheme of work video starts off a two-lesson drawing project, where pupils will use their skills to draw from observation and focus on texture and tone.

Children should draw from real life so they can observe details more carefully. They’ll be drawing a toy or another 3D object, using what they see to shape their drawing, not just what they think is there.

To start, pupils revisit using shapes to sketch out their object. They’re reminded to press lightly, build up gradually and take their time refining. As they work, pupils will apply what they’ve learned about texture and tone. They’re encouraged to think about how light and shadow help make things look three-dimensional.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 2 Understanding tone and texture unit. It supports children to draw with care, creativity and purpose.
