Exploring shadows through art

This archived Art and design scheme of work video introduces teachers to a lesson where Key stage 2 pupils create and perform with their own shadow puppets and theatres. Linking with science learning on light and shadows, pupils explore the strengths and limitations of shadow puppetry, such as how outlines are visible but drawn details are not. The video demonstrates each step, from designing and cutting puppet profiles, attaching sticks, and constructing simple theatres from cereal boxes to staging performances with light sources and creative storytelling.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s original KS2 Art and design resources. It supports teachers in combining science with art, guiding pupils to investigate shadows, design imaginative characters, and collaborate on performances, while building confidence in both creative expression and scientific understanding.
