Decorating scrolls

This Art and design scheme of work video supports children as they move from design to final piece, creating artwork inspired by ancient Egyptian scrolls on their handmade papyrus-style paper.

The lesson begins with pupils revisiting their sketchbook designs and thinking carefully about how to scale and position their artwork on the paper. They plan by lightly sketching simple shapes to map out their composition before adding colour and detail. Pupils are encouraged to take their time and reflect on how to use the full space creatively. Once they’ve completed their artwork, they review it against the success criteria and consider how to improve it further. Optional finishing touches include outlining key details with black fine liner or adding accents of gold paint.

The video then sets out the final step which is transforming the artwork into a scroll. Pupils can do this by attaching string or by fixing their paper to painted cardboard tubes, adding a finishing flourish to their Egyptian-inspired piece.
