Building simple pulley systems
This Design and technology scheme of work video introduces pulley systems and supports teachers in helping Year 5 children understand how pulleys make lifting easier by changing direction or reducing the force needed. It explains how to build a working single pulley using gear systems, apply knowledge of force and motion and test pulley designs against a given brief. Teachers are guided through the use of mounting boards, gears and bobbins. They are shown how to support the children in improving stability and exploring motorised systems for greater challenge.
This video simplifies mechanical concepts so teachers feel confident and well prepared to support the children in building and evaluating functional pulley systems in the lesson and unit below.
