Building simple pulley systems

This Design and technology video introduces teachers to teaching pulley systems, equipping them with the knowledge to help children understand how pulleys make lifting easier by changing the direction or reducing the amount of force needed. It covers how to build a working single pulley using gear systems, apply knowledge of force and motion, and test designs against a given brief. Teachers are guided through using mounting boards, gears, and bobbins, and how to support children in improving stability and exploring motorised systems for greater challenge.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Design and technology – Mechanisms teacher videos. It simplifies mechanical concepts, helping teachers feel confident and prepared to guide children in building and evaluating functional pulley systems in the lesson and unit below.
