Building Mechanised Car Prototypes
This Design and technology video introduces teachers to a unit in which pupils design, build, and test three mechanised car prototypes. It covers how to construct and troubleshoot axle and wheel mechanisms, draw exploded diagrams, and understand the function of each component. Teachers are guided through the build and launch methods of each prototype, from a simple inclined plane model to slingshot and wind-up mechanisms, along with techniques for evaluating each car’s performance in terms of distance, durability, and design.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Design and technology – Mechanisms teacher videos. It breaks down practical techniques and engineering concepts, helping teachers feel confident and prepared to support children in comparing and improving moving vehicle designs in the lesson and unit below.
