Introducing prehistoric art

This Art and design scheme of work video helps teachers guide pupils as they draw familiar British animals in the bold, simplified style of prehistoric cave artists.

The lesson will begin by exploring how early humans made art by using natural materials like charcoal, ochres and animal fats to paint mostly animals and symbols in dark caves lit by flickering oil lamps. The video explains how prehistoric artists focused on strong outlines and simple shapes rather than exact detail.

Children will then apply these techniques in their sketchbooks. They start by identifying key shapes in their chosen animal, sketching a basic outline before going over it with thick black crayon or pen. Inside the outline, they’ll add simple marks to suggest texture or fur. The video encourages drawing multiple animals to build confidence. Pupils should also check their work against examples of real cave art to keep the style accurate.
