Safe heating and burning practice

This Science video introduces teachers to key safety procedures for conducting heating and burning activities in the classroom. These investigations can be highly engaging, but safety must come first. Ensure at least two adults are present during the activity to supervise pupils. Pupils should roll up sleeves, tuck in ties, tie back long hair, and wear safety goggles. Clear the workspace of any flammable or unnecessary items, and use a heat mat or sand-filled foil tray to protect surfaces.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Science scheme – safety. It supports teachers in creating a safe, controlled environment for exploring materials. Tea lights should be lit by an adult only, with ignition sources kept out of pupils’ reach. Foil cases are ideal for heating as they withstand high temperatures. Use tongs to hold materials above the flame, and always place heated items on the heat mat to cool. Remind pupils not to touch hot materials or the ends of tongs. By following these steps, you’ll ensure activities are both safe and memorable for your class.
