Recreating paintings

This Art and design scheme of work video introduces a creative photography challenge, in which pupils use their developing photography and design skills to recreate a famous painting using props and costumes they have to hand. The class will explore how to capture facial expression, pose and composition.

After exploring Edvard Munch’s ‘The Scream’, children can then choose their own artwork to recreate—either from a curated selection or their own research. Working in pairs or small groups, they plan their approach, making thoughtful decisions about props, settings and framing. The video suggests how to support children in staging and capturing their photographs, using either digital cameras or tablets. It encourages creativity, collaboration and problem-solving, with examples of how pupils can ‘think outside the box’ to interpret key elements of a painting.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 6 Photo opportunity unit. It equips teachers with the tools to guide pupils in applying creative thinking and digital skills in an engaging way.
