Mixing and applying colours

This Art and design scheme of work video supports pupils in the second of two lessons focused on colour, where they explore paint mixing through a response to Jasper Johns’ ‘Zero to Nine’ artworks.

Pupils begin by revisiting the colour theory from the last session, using the Play-Doh colour balls. Each pupil works on A3 paper, starting by writing the numbers 0 to 9 across their page. Then, using thick paint, they begin filling in their numbers. They apply one primary colour at a time. Next, they mix their paints to create secondary colours and apply these carefully to their work. The video models the impasto technique and reminds pupils to brush in one direction for a smoother finish. They’re also guided to work slowly to avoid colours running together.

At the end, pupils gather to reflect on their paintings. They review their use of colour, technique and composition.
