Creating a Stone Age animal painting

This Art and design scheme of work video introduces a lesson in which children build on their learning about colour mixing with natural pigments to create their Stone Age-inspired animal painting.

Using the textured backgrounds made in Lesson 3, they begin by copying their animal sketches from their sketchbooks onto the surface. This can be done with a black wax crayon or similar. This step is optional, but it can help make their final image more accurate. Next, they paint over the outline using a fine brush before starting to add colour and simple pattern details to the body, like markings or fur. Children are encouraged to mix their own palette of prehistoric colours using poster paints. This should include colours that reflect what may have been used in prehistoric times.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 3 Prehistoric painting unit.
