Introducing the Year 3 Networks unit

This Computing scheme of work video introduces teachers to the key knowledge and concepts covered in the Year 3 Networks unit. It supports teachers in explaining what a network is, how data is shared across connected devices, and how this connects to the wider Internet.

The unit includes five sequenced lessons, each building on the last, with supporting CPD and pupil videos. Pupils will be taught the basics of networks—starting with two or more connected devices—before exploring how information is shared, the role of servers, and how routers connect networks to the Internet. Children will also discover how websites are broken down into data packets to travel more efficiently online.

The unit includes unplugged activities that bring computing concepts to life without the need for devices. These hands-on experiences help pupils visualise how networks operate and understand abstract ideas in a practical way.
