Exploring drawing in reverse

This archived Art and design scheme of work video introduces teachers to a creative technique where Key stage 2 pupils draw using erasers rather than pencils. It challenges pupils to rethink mistakes by exploring how erasers can be used to create marks, rather than remove them. The video demonstrates each step, from covering the page with graphite shading to erasing lines to reveal a negative-style still life composition. Pupils are encouraged to compare their eraser drawings with earlier sketches and charcoal studies, noticing the unique, atmospheric effects.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s original KS2 Art and design resources. It equips teachers to help pupils embrace mistakes as part of the creative process, while developing observational skills and experimenting with alternative drawing techniques.
