Superhero mixed media mural
This Kapow Art and design video supports teachers in guiding pupils through the first lesson in a three-week collaborative project, culminating in a large-scale mixed media comic-inspired artwork. Children will be working on A1 card using overlapping superhero poses, explosive comic-style shapes and dynamic lettering to create a dramatic scene. Drawing inspiration from comic art and pop artists like Roy Lichtenstein, pupils begin by drawing around peers in action poses and filling the remaining space with stylised explosions and bold superhero text. The design is then enhanced with textured layers made from torn comic paper, outlined with thick black lines, and sections decorated with patterns.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Art and design scheme of work – comics. It prepares teachers to support pupils in building confidence with scale, composition, and mixed media techniques including layering, collage, and bold painting. The lesson focuses on collective creativity, visual storytelling and pattern, while laying the foundation for further development of the work over the following sessions. Teachers are encouraged to model each stage and make space for drying time before lesson two, where colour washes and dot matrix effects will be applied.
